Boston's Leader Mayor Wu Responds to President Trump's Warning to Relocate FIFA World Cup Games from Boston
Boston's mayor, Mayor Wu, suggested that the city was prepared for a dispute with President Donald Trump regarding his claim that he could order FIFA to remove World Cup games from the stadium in Foxborough, situated approximately 35 kilometers south-west of Boston.
Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast this week to answer comments from the Trump administration, which had labeled her as "far-left." Trump had warned that he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "address its issues."
A great deal of it is locked down by contract so that no one, even if they live in the White House, can undo it.
Wu added, "We live in a time where for attention, for power, to test limits ... repeated warnings ... are issued at individuals and communities who stand their ground and submit or follow along to a hateful agenda."
Mayor Wu also remarked, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, sadly, we are going to be part of a discussion that is targeting what Boston stands for." Wu concluded by stressing her support for the Boston, declaring, "Ten toes down for our city."
The President's Comments and FIFA's Involvement
Earlier this week, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen alongside President Trump at the international summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. The FIFA president has also visited the Oval Office and presented World Cup tournament and Club World Cup trophies to the president as gifts.
On Tuesday, President Trump was questioned on unrest in a Boston neighborhood that involved a police car being burned. He replied, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Gianni – the head of FIFA, who's great."
Trump added, "I'd tell him: 'We should relocate the games' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also specifically targeted Mayor Wu, stating, "Their mayor is ineffective ... she's radical left, and they're taking over some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"
Past Warnings and Upcoming Tournament Information
Trump has previously suggested that he would have the same conversation with the FIFA president about relocating matches from other host cities, which are among the 16 host cities across North America.
The United States is joint hosts the 2026 World Cup with neighboring countries. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be held from 11 June to 19 July in the coming year.
