Kristi Noem Inspects Portland ICE Center Alongside MAGA Influencers

Kristi Noem, who holds the position of the head of the Department of Homeland Security, inspected the ICE facility in Portland on a recent weekday. On site, she witnessed a limited protest outside, which differs significantly to the intense "siege" alleged by former President Donald Trump.

Joined by Right-Wing Media Figures

Noem was accompanied by a group of right-wing figures who were whisked from the airport to the site in her official convoy. The Department of Homeland Security has shared escalating online posts depicting federal officers conducting immigration raids and using chemical irritants at crowds.

Gathering Outside

Local law enforcement established a perimeter outside the building in the city’s south waterfront neighborhood before the secretary’s arrival. A handful protesters, among them one dressed as a chicken and another as a baby shark, were kept at a distance.

Audio blared from a protest encampment nearby, with lyrics mentioning Donald Trump and allegations. One protester yelled to a government videographer filming from the top of the building, asking whether the homeland security had been renamed the "ministry of propaganda".

Media Access

Reporters from independent publications were also kept at the police line outside, while the conservative personalities in her party—Benny Johnson, Nick Sortor, and David Media—broadcast online posts of the secretary participating in federal agents in prayer inside, giving a motivational speech, and telling a individual of the state guard to "Get ready".

Background Developments

The secretary has previously echoed the president’s allegations that the handful of individuals—who have rallied in their small numbers outside the office since recent months, including one in an inflatable frog costume—are "extremists" who have placed the facility "under siege", making the use of federal troops necessary.

Yet, on last weekend, a court official in Portland halted the former president's effort to nationalize the state's guard, stating that the his allegations that the generally nonviolent city was "being destroyed" were "untethered to the facts".

A day later, the court official, Karin Immergut—who was selected to the bench by the former president—extended the decision to block National Guard troops from elsewhere from being used in the city. The judge ruled after Trump reacted to her first order by seeking to send members of the California's guard to Oregon.

Escalating Tensions

Since Donald Trump focused on the limited yet ongoing gathering outside the ICE facility and made unsubstantiated allegations that the city is "in a state of war", a rising count of his adherents, including MAGA influencers, have turned up to face the demonstrators.

A number of these clashes have resulted in altercations and fistfights, resulting in detentions by the Portland police. One influencer was taken into custody after he sought to enter a demonstration site on a walkway near the office and was engaged in a fight over an American flag. The influencer had earlier seized the banner from a protester who was setting it on fire.

Legal accusations against the influencer were subsequently withdrawn after an protest in right-wing outlets induced the head of the rights office of the Department of Justice, the division head, to suggest a review of the law enforcement agency over supposed partisan treatment.

Female protesters the influencer was detained over a conflict with still have pending accusations.

Government Statements

Over the weekend, Oregon’s governor, Tina Kotek, accused DHS agents in the site of trying to antagonize the demonstrators by using disproportionate amounts of chemical irritants in a populated area and including partisan figures to film the protesters from the roof of the facility. "Their actions are meant to provoke," Kotek said.

A trio of those right-wing personalities were described in a police report last month as "opposing demonstrators" who "frequently reappear and antagonize the demonstrators until they are confronted or subjected to spray" and decline "ongoing instructions from law enforcement to stay away from" the protesters.

Online Content

One influencer, a previous media worker who transitioned as a right-wing commentator after being fired from his previous employer for content theft, published video of the secretary looking down from the top of the ICE facility at the small group of protesters below, including Jack Dickinson who wears a chicken costume to taunt Trump. He labeled the video of the secretary inspecting the placid scene below: "Governor Noem faces off against radicals and a chicken-clad individual".

Regardless of the contrast between the claims from Trump and Noem that this facility is "besieged" from "domestic terrorists" and visible proof of a limited group of individuals in non-threatening attire, the figures with Noem continued to refer to the group as harmful activists.

Meeting with Police Chief

On site, the secretary also met with the city's top cop, Bob Day, who has been depicted as "liberal" in conservative media for permitting his personnel to arrest Nick Sortor. In a online post on the engagement, Johnson stated that the police head had "aligned with violent ANTIFA militants attacking journalists and officers outside ICE facility".

The secretary's convoy then drove out the facility past a handful of individuals on the nearby road, including one dressed as a animal wearing a headgear.
