The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
