Roughly fifty automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then located numerous other vandalized automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report initial examinations indicate the fluid was most likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet aware of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they stated.
City officials said they were trying "to resolve the case" and have asked to the community for tips.
An important official said the incident made him speechless and required to be addressed quickly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a gunman targeting individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
